Playak News Flash - October 28, 2010
The world's latest paddling headlines.
The Roaming Dials End of the season?
The Roaming Dials - Tim Johnson continues to lead Luc Mehl and me down ever steepening creeks: Magic Mile, Upper Willow, and, this past weekend, Upper-Upper Bird and its handful of stout drops, namely "Walls of Jehrico", a "20 foot" waterfall.
Jez Blanchard Dry season boating in North Queensland
Jez Blanchard - After returning from Tassie we have been super lucky to score some very wet days during what is normally the driest month of the year up north. With everything pumping we hit up Josephine falls and behana gorge, along with a few other rivers. Here is a short vid I made up from the last few days of paddling.
Jackson Kayak Skook in October
Jackson Kayak - Here's a quick video from my recent trip to Skook (my first video!). The weather was nice and the tides were great. I worked on blunting all summer just to get ready to go back to Skook, it sure was fun! Last year at Skook I was still using a star, but now that I have moved up a boat size I'm even happier. The all star is perfect from holes to big waves!
Tomass Marnics Altai 2010 - Part 2
Tomass Marnics - Continuation of the story about our trip to Altai Mountains this year.
Simon Willis Tay Descent 2010
Simon Willis - Check out the video!
Rapid Magazine Blog Video: Uganda With Brandon Hepburn
Rapid Magazine Blog - If I had to use one word to describe the whole trip it would be outstanding! We got our A360 flight to Dubai, then straight onto Entebbe. Emily Wall picked us up and took us to the best place on Earth: Hairy Lemon Island. We got there late at night and couldn't see a thing, but settled in anyway. The next morning our alarm was banging on the roof, crazy monkeys!
The Lake is the Boss Heading south
The Lake is the Boss - Against all of my normal instincts, the VOR and I migrated south this weekend. Lake Superior still has some prime paddling left, the deer are just entering the rut at the hunting camp, and its an up year in the 10 year grouse cycle. Still, we loaded up the boats and headed south to paddle Red Rocks lake, south of Des Moines, IA, with some old friends and to meet some new ones. It's funny how paddling those long skinny boats serves as the perfect introduction to all sorts of interesting people.
Canoe & Kayak UK Learn how to make an Anglesey Stick
Canoe & Kayak UK - Get a few days paddling around the coast of Anglesey in the sunshine, and in the unlikely event of miserable weather (or as a way of making use of the winter evenings) benefit from expert tuition as you make a paddle that works perfectly with your physique and paddling style.
Paddling Instructor Blog Lumpy Waters Symposium Caving Day [Video]
Paddling Instructor Blog - Friend of the site and fellow P&H Kayaks Team Paddler, Christopher Lockyer put together this great looking video from the Lumpy Waters Symposium which was held in Oregon a couple of weekends ago.
SeaKayakPhoto.com Auchalick Bay, Loch Fyne
SeaKayakPhoto.com - We continued paddling north up Loch Fyne along an unspoiled and remote coastline.

The world's latest paddling headlines.
Charlie Simmons 12 days to go.....GREEN RACE BABY!! Photo Update
Charlie Simmons - With only two weeks to go until the race, the chargers are starting to turn out....and not just the locals. Even with less than ideal river flow the monkey got spanked quite hard this passed weekend; though it did bite back on a few just to show its teeth. Here are some photos from the past few days.
River Left Productions I'll run it next time…
River Left Productions - For many paddlers like myself, we have told ourselves "I'll run it next time." We might be talking about an intimidating drop or a creek as a whole. Being afraid to run the hard drops and creeks is a good thing, and each paddler should take their time and decide if they should run or walk a certain drop. Raymondskill creek is one of finest creeks in PA; I first dipped my paddle blade in the tanned waters of R-kill back in 2006.
Evan Garcia Mexico Y La Revolucion
Evan Garcia - Well there's not much to say at this point. Mexico is the bomb and there is a lot of kayaking to be done here. Beers and big waterfalls! The mixture happens to be a good one...lucky for us. After a whole day filming in Mexico city, the largest in the world, we finally bounced out of the siphon of 27 million people and off to the country, the city of Tlapacoyan, and the home of the Rio Alsaseca.
The Blonde Blogger Days Seven & Eight: GBR Freestyle Team Selection
The Blonde Blogger - So for days 7 and 8 of my 365 project here's just a few shots from this weekend's GBR Freestyle Kayak team selection. The 2011 team are being selected for the World Championships in Plattling, Germany
Girls at Play Ladies on the Lower G
Girls at Play - Ladies on the Lower G, the annual American Whitewater Fundraiser, took place for the sixth year in a row September 17. This year was the largest group of women yet! We had a group of thirty women paddling together down the Lower Gauley, and raised $750! Many of the women had paddled this gem of a river before but several were their for a supportive first descent.
worldkayak blogs British Team Selection weekend Nottingham 2010
worldkayak blogs - Another good weekend at Holme Pierrepont Nottingham with competitions both saturday in the ever changing 2nd feature and Sunday in the Tardis proved for a fun weekend. It was nice to see everyone about and up for a good competition.
A whole bunch of Ing's Meilleurs bay-st cyr river-da swisha
A whole bunch of Ing's - I set off today with only one goal in mind; to finish off one section of river I had missed in the past year. No real things were drawling me to the area, except a blank piece on my map that required colouring in.
Ron Olsen, Twin Cities Border Lakes
Ron Olsen, Twin Cities - Late Fall trips to the Canadian border lakes can be tempting when the promise of nice weather is in the forecast, especially when I know Summer boat traffic is long gone. This time of year, the north country lakes are quiet. It's the time between fishing, hunting, and snow machines. Kabetogama was the choice this time, and with a base camp at Woodenfrog campground, we had a perfect opportunity to check out the West end of Kab.
PaddlingLight Fram Museum Kayaks and Kayaking Gear
PaddlingLight - In 2008, I visited Norway to kayak and be a tourist. The trip started in Oslo with visits to the museums. Then we flew north to kayak in the Lofoten Islands. After the Lofoten Islands, we kayaked in Aurlandsfjorden near Flåm. The scenery was stunning the entire trip – it's the type of place that you can drop a camera and get a great picture. Even though the scenery was overwhelming and the kayaking good, I enjoyed the museums the most.

The world's latest paddling headlines.
David Fairweather Easter in Nepal – the Thule Bheri River
David Fairweather - One of the things that I like about foreign kayaking trips is that I get to see new places, meet new people, and learn new things. One of the new things that I learnt on this particular trip is the meaning of the phrase "continuous grade 4 paddling". The educator in this case was the incredible Thule Bheri River, which flows south from the mountain region of Dolpo in Western Nepal to the Terai.
David Fairweather A short trip to Slovenia
David Fairweather - I have just got back from a short visit to Slovenia, although the intended purpose of the visit was research, whilst there I managed to successfully combine work with a little bit of paddling and some sightseeing.
Go Boating AU Norrish Creek BC
Go Boating AU - My exited first day with my new Go - Pro HD, On a medium'sh volume Norrish Creek run. This was my first creek run i ever did in when arriving in BC and is still a favourite.
David Fairweather Three weeks in India: Such a long long time to be gone and a short time to be there…
David Fairweather - India is beautiful, chaotic but beautiful. Three weeks in the Indian Himalaya is simply not enough time to experience the place and I'm sure I will be back as often as time and money allow.
Go Boating AU Lea River Extreme - Headcam - Tasmania
Go Boating AU - Filmed during the 8th Annual TEVA Lea Extreme Race in northern Tasmania. It depicts Adrian Kiernan runnning a sub 10 minute race time from top to bottom and including all the significant rapids and their names etc.
Level 6 Tweaks, Creeks, & Stomach Tea
Level 6 - Started off the summer season in Europe–flew in to Munich on a Thursday, arrived in Tacen, Slovenia for a brief training session on Friday to set up for a long weekend of racing. Jet lag is a killer, and I didn't prepare as well as I had hoped. The weekend turned out okay- I finished, but the results were not what I expected- didn't make top twenty to move into the semi-finals. Guess traveling takes it out of you. Then we (Ricky Powell and I) packed up and headed West to France for 2 weeks of training and racing. After getting lost I have determined that no amount of GPS maps downloaded can navigate you to the heart of France.
Adventurous Experiences "my wetsuit's letting in water..."
Adventurous Experiences - ..i'm getting wet!!" Yesterday's Coasteering session was a remarkable one. A few of the lads who have experienced some of our more demanding sessions, wished to introduce their partner's and friends to the delights of Coasteering... on an introductory...

Playak News Flash - October 25, 2010
The world's latest paddling headlines.
Wavesport Blogs I love the Fall in New England!
Wavesport Blogs - We got more rain just as promised! A bunch of us planned on going to the Moose Fest but then we bailed when the rivers around my house in VT came up. A bunch of friends came over including my brother Mark. We paddled the West Branch of the Deerfield River at 3ft on Saturday. We had a great time paddling my home creek. While we were boating Jeff took a ride to the hardware store and picked up some insulation so when we got back everyone was put to work putting up insulation in the basement.
Dave Crerar Pan Ams 2010
Dave Crerar - This August we had our first ever Pan American Championships on the Ottawa river. With 5 countries represented this made the even a bit more of a Pan American/ Irish/ British championships. It has been quite a while since I have competed and so I was pretty nervous even before the line up of competitors was announced.
Dave Crerar Lachine
Dave Crerar - Lachine located on the St Laurence, only a short drive from Montreal's downtown, is one of the best waves I have ever surfed. However, not really knowing where we were going, it took a little longer than usual to get there. Montreal being a big city, it took us a while to find our friends house, who turned out not to be there. So we ventured to the car park by Lachine.
Go Boating AU Leven Canyon River Guide
Go Boating AU - Just finished a new video guide for the Leven Canyon in Tasmania. This has got to be my favourite run in tasmania and arguably my favourite run of all time!
Global Surfski The evolution of surfski kayaks
Global Surfski - During the last couple of days I have had a very interesting mail conversation with Clyde Hedlund about the evolution of surfskis. This amazing guy, who now is pushing towards 70, shared his personal experiences and thoughts with me.
David Fairweather A Short Trip in Long Boats
David Fairweather - Last week I borrowed a pair of Speeders from Pyranha and headed up to Scotland with a friend from Guildford for a gentle trip along the Great Glen, from Fort William to Inverness. This is the most relaxed multi-day trip I've done yet – more 'Three Men in a Boat' than 'Canoeing Down Everest', and I thoroughly enjoyed it for that.
Freecaster South West Canoe Show (video)
Freecaster - UK Active Outdoors video summary of the the 2010 South West Canoe Show held in Exeter. This is one of the biggest shows on the calendar and allows paddlers the chance to see and try the latest gear, as well as being a great day out.
PaddleTales Oklahoma Hobie Mirage Kayaks in Wichita Kansas
PaddleTales Oklahoma - We test paddled two Hobie Mirage kayaks at Santa Fe Lake near Wichita, Kansas on Memorial Day weekend this year. My son Dylan paddled the inflatable version: the Hobie Mirage i12s and my wife and I both paddled the hardshell version: the Hobie Mirage Outback SUV. Both kayaks were rented from Brooks Canoe and Kayak in Augusta, Kansas.

Playak News Flash - October 24, 2010
The world's latest paddling headlines.
Kokatat Blog Uganda 2010 with Brandon Hepburn
Kokatat Blog - If I had to use one word to describe the whole trip it would be outstanding! After one amazing breakfast we hit the club wave. Man, it was a big difference from being on holes most of the year to some big Africa waves. Two hours later we break for lunch woooo!
Level 6 The Slave Survives!
Level 6 - After several years of protest, meetings and incredible white water paddling festivals on the Slave River in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, the official announcement regarding the proposed dam was unveiled. There will be no dam on the Slave!
River Left Productions Moosefest 2010
River Left Productions - This year was one of the best moosefests in a while, with plenty of water in the area we went in search of some stouts to show brenton, mark cambell, and nc resident mark taylor the local funyinz. Great weekend!
PaddleTales Oklahoma Keep Your Kayaking Economical
PaddleTales Oklahoma - As a purely recreational kayaker that rarely travels more than an hour or two away from home, kayaking should be a very inexpensive sport for me. Surprisingly enough, my passion for this fantastic sport has driven me to spend a small fortune on my paddling. There is no end to how much money you can spend on paddling...and it is worth every dime! Here are some help you keep your kayaking affordable.
Valentin Grollemund Stand Up Paddle - NAISH Glide 14'
Valentin Grollemund - That's it, the Stand Up Paddling adventure starts for me!! recieved last week my brand new NAISH Glide 14'. I tryed it last wednesday on my home lake in Barraqueville, and I've to say that board in a real machine!!! My dad Jean, took some photos at the same time.
rockratrobinson Visiting Yorkshire and Scotland
rockratrobinson - When I say Scotland I don't mean the Highlands, but rather Dumfries and Galloway, which is only just a stones throw from Carlisle, and has many a perfect river for messing around in boats. The river of choice was the Annan, which we have visited on one previous occasion, but failed to get on because of the unusually high river levels. Today, the river was much lower and it was a perfect way to spend the day.
Atlantic Paddle Surfing Paddle Surf Hawaii Hull Paddler/Rippers
Atlantic Paddle Surfing - Various clips paddling and playing around in tiny to small waves on the prototype Chambers Hull Paddler/Rippers. One board, many uses... So much fun!
SUP Surf 2010 Cline Mann Memorial Paddleboard Race
SUP Surf - Here are some pictures I took from 2010 Cline Mann Race which was held a while back. This race was during the 6 man canoe regatta season which I participated in…kinda. I got sick a few weeks into the season and was laid out for a couple weeks. I was out of the water for almost a month. I only paddled in the first and last race of the season. I wish I could have been strong for the whole season.
sea kayaking dot net Rolling a Umiak: Alaska, 1928
sea kayaking dot net - I came across some archival hunting umiak footage in the Alaska state archives of native Alaskan native watercraft. I fiddled with the footage with iMovie, added some transitions and footage.   copyright...
