Kayaking, for example, has exploded as a sport, reflecting a statewide and national trend, while the popularity of power boating has been tempered by the recession and post-9/11 security concerns. Fishing, traditionally the premier sporting activity on the river, is under new stresses primarily because of overharvesting in the ocean impacting the river. Fishermen have loved their sport too much. [photo courtesy Hoboken Now Archive]
