Playak News Flash - December 11, 2013
The world's latest paddling headlines.
Naish Naish'S Manca Notar Takes 2nd in Paris
Naish - For the fourth consecutive year, the Nautic SUP Paris Crossing ran through Paris in Stand Up Paddle form as part of the annual Paris Boat Show. Europe's largest SUP race attracted over 300 hundred paddlers to the River Seine, the waterway that flows through the heart of the French capital, for a bitterly cold but spectacular weekend of racing.
Fanatic SUP Jake Jensen 2nd, Chase Kosterlitz 5th
Fanatic SUP - The Paddle Royal took place last weekend with an epic Long Distance race finishing and four different short-medium distance course and sprint races. Points from all five races are combined (with the Long Distance Race being counted twice) and each paddler's worst result is dropped before the final rankings list is produced.
YakAngler Jackson Kayak Big Rig Overview
YakAngler - As I drove down the dirt road I had no idea what lay ahead of me; I had never seen the lake we were fishing, and the kayak I was using was a brand-new release. When I turned the corner I saw the typical wrapping of a newly-shipped kayak sticking out of the bed of a pickup truck. What was in the wrapper was anything but typical though.
Am. Whitewater California Rivers Close Due to Rim Fire
Am. Whitewater - The Stanislaus National Forest in California has issued a closure order for the areas impacted by the Rim Fire. The Rim Fire Closure Area affects the Groveland and Mi-Wok Ranger Districts in order to provide public safety and protect natural resources.
Fanatic SUP New Kyron Rathbone Clip
Fanatic SUP - Kyron is stoked with the finished product: "Lots of wipeouts went down for this one but worth it as always and I only snapped one paddle and 5 leg ropes whilst filming.
ACA Congratulations to December Kokatat Instructor of The Month, Dan Cox
ACA - Dan has been paddling for the past 15 years, and began messing about in canoes when he was young. After being inspired by video footage of rafts on the Zambezi River, and after watching whitewater paddling in the Olympics, Dan was hooked on kayaking.
SUP Magazine Interview with Maui SUP talent Bernd Roediger
SUP Magazine - Berne Roediger talks about his passion for Stand Up Paddling and is looking forward to compete with the big guns next year in the world tour. Being from Maui, Berne's into water sports , he talks about why he thinks Maui produces lots of talented Stand Up Paddlers. This year he could not race having injured his back Stand Up Surfing big waves at the Marshall Islands but he's healed and fit to race again for next year and he is definitely going to challenge other SUP contenders next year and make the SUP sports more exciting.
unsponsored Keeping Warm
unsponsored - Staying both warm and dry makes any kayaking adventure that much more pleasant. I've been kayaking for over 25 years now and am amazed how much the kit has moved on during that time.
Zet Kayaks UK A Few Dry Weeks and a Little Boat Modification
Zet Kayaks UK - With the cold dark evenings having set in, and there being no rain at weekends, it's been a quiet time for any exciting paddling with everyone getting excited for Christmas trips. When combined with the fact that I've had a few internet issues (took me 3 hours to upload the pictures for this post), it's given me plenty of time to play around with and fix my boats.
Frogma Manorville Hike with The Sebago Canoe Club
Frogma - Some of us at Sebago do keep paddling all winter, but not everyone's got the inclination (or the cash, a drysuit can be a very expensive addition to one's paddling wardrobe).
SUPracer Team Australia has selected athletes to participate on the 2014 ISA World Champs
SUPracer - We're exactly five months out from the 2014 ISA World Champs in Nicaragua but we already know which paddlers could potentially be holding up the team trophy on the final day of competition. Despite 25-30 different nations expected to head to Nicaragua next year, all eyes will be on the mighty Team Australia, who are two-time defending champs and already hot favorites for a three-peat in my book.
SUP Magazine The River Life: Chuck Patterson, Dave Boehne and Slater Trout
SUP Magazine - This segment of "The River Life," features Chuck Patterson, Dave Boehne and Slater Trout. In the next few weeks, look for more segments of this SUP magazine original series. Some of the world's best athletes are on a river expedition on the Salmon River and they show us how it is to pursue white water SUP, its different from surfing and paddling on oceans and its challenging.
Mark Sundin An Afternoon with The Big O
Mark Sundin - We had a rare treat yesterday afternoon, in the form of a paddle clinic from 12-time Molokai world surfski champion Oscar Chalupsky. A crew of 16 paddlers, all except one of whom were essentially sea kayakers who have gotten into surfski in the past couple of years, took part in the three hour session where Oscar covered the basics of forward stroke for surkski, remounts, and a broad history of the evolution of the wing paddle.
Kayak Hot Dogs The Incomappleux Expedition
Kayak Hot Dogs - 5 km into our river descent and we've already encountered three newly formed rapids. Caused by violent washouts on several tributary creeks, we begin to fear what the next stretch of river may bring. From what we know, the valley's gradient is about to increase. Combined with the higher than expected flows, there's a good chance we'll be in for some grueling portages.
SUP Magazine An women's experience in expedition paddling
SUP Magazine - Soon we were imagining our first foray into expedition paddling, a 20-mile circumnavigation of Conanicut Island. It would prove to be a perfect start to our deep dive into this addiction. We consulted with our friend Jim Bernard, a kayak and SUP instructor who kayaked around the island many times before. He gave us great advice, suggesting our launch spot and helping us plan a route to coincide with the tides.
