Playak News Flash - June 9, 2014
The world's latest paddling headlines.
SUP Magazine Exploring Eleuthera Island
SUP Magazine - If you drive the island of Eleuthera, a sliver of land in the eastern Bahamas, there is a bridge where you can see the calm turquoise Caribbean Sea to one side and the chop of the gray Atlantic on the other. This meeting of the waters feels like the yin and yang of the island—a convergence of standup paddling and surfing.
Sarah Outen Brutal & beautiful
Sarah Outen - We always knew it would be hard. Really hard. In fact, as I bobbed about in Happy Socks on the North Pacific last summer, trying to figure where I could land and how I could continue the L2L journey, I called Justine to ask her if she was serious about kayaking the Aleutians.
Nathan Pfeifer Lochsa River, ID - Memorial Day Weekend 2014
Nathan Pfeifer - Every Memorial Day weekend, a core group of buddies and I head to California for some classic kayaking down granite-laden rivers and amazing weather. Unfortunately, the multi-year drought that the state has been going through had soured our yearly tradition, especially these last two years.
Trash Paddler A Peek into Fort Meadow Brook
Trash Paddler - Had a chance to get in a short paddle this morning before an early afternoon work commitment. Staying close to home afforded an opportunity to paddle a bit of the Assabet River and pop into Fort Meadow Brook (at left).
SquareRock Claire O'Hara – BBC Filming on the Tees
SquareRock - Next year is the 50th Anniversary of the Pennie Way and as part of the celebration the BBC a filming a 3 part documentary and have asked me to take the shows presenter, Polar Expedition and Diving Guru National Geographic's Paul Rose on a paddling journey down part of the route.
A whole bunch of Ing's Torn drysuit.
A whole bunch of Ing's - Thumping of rain on hatches; cold drips upon my hands. A calm day on the ocean but far from a placid day at home. The drying rack had tore a huge hole in my drysuit which put me in a rather foul/maniac/insanity plea type of mood.
International Rivers PR – 30 Years Too Long to Wait for Justice in Guatemala
International Rivers - Thirty-four organizations from around the world call on the World Bank to delay its vote on a $340 million loan to the Government of Guatemala until long overdue reparations are paid to communities that were terrorized by the army.
International Rivers Lessons and Questions on Dam Removal
International Rivers - Four years ago, I led a small group of people up a stairway cut into the slope of a river canyon. We arrived at the platform overlooking Englebright Dam – a 70-year old, 240-ft-high dam on the Yuba River in Northern California – which is a complete barrier to one of the last wild runs of salmon in the whole greater San Francisco Bay and Delta watershed.
SUPboarder SUP for Sanctuary
SUPboarder - SUP For Sanctuary, offers stand up paddleboarding as a form of therapy to those looking to improve their well-being and poor mental health. It is an inspired collaboration between the famous Cornish charity 'Sea Sanctuary' and WeSUP Paddleboard Centre in Falmouth, Cornwall.
Jackson Kayak Paddling with Giants
Jackson Kayak - I had arranged to meet team Jackson Gary (The Edge) Edgeworth at Rendezvous River Sports the following morning. He chose the Gros Ventre (GV), a local 'easy' Class II-IV creek that was his favorite and told me it was at a really good flow for my introduction to high water boating. It is a short run – about 15 minutes, but with a 213 foot per mile gradient and the gauge showing 5ft (something like 2500cfs) the lateral and mid river waves were some of the biggest I have encountered.
YakAngler Hobie Bass Open Results
YakAngler - On Friday afternoon I loaded up my Toyota Tundra and hit the road, heading to the Hobie Bass Open held on Kentucky Lake. This tournament is a qualifying event for the Hobie Fishing Worlds tournament held in Amsterdam, Netherlands, October 6-10, 2014.
YakAngler KARS Park Redfish Tournament
YakAngler - It's tourney time again! Once again, the KARS staff and I will host a kayak, canoe, and SUP tournament. KARS Park, located on the pristine waters of the No Motor Zone in the Merritt Island National Refuge on East Central Florida's Space Coast is perhaps one of Florida's greatest treasures for inshore anglers.
unsponsored Cassian River
unsponsored - The Cassian river is a 9.5km section with a 4% drop profile. It is definitely one of the best creek you can find around Quebec. When you make the first stroke on Cassian Lake, you know you're about to run approximately 60 quality Class IV-V rapids.
