Playak News Flash - January 18, 2016
The world's latest paddling headlines.
Elder SUP Gnarly Buoy Turns SUP Racing Friendship
Elder SUP - The La Ventana Classic ended its race week with a 5.5 downwind race from the Hot Springs to Baja Joe's. Overall rankings were announced at the end of the day with Bonnie Fromm, Terri Plunkett and Dianna Steven taking first, second and third respectively for the Wahine class.
SUPboarder Aaron Rowe enjoying onshore SUP mush
SUPboarder - It doesn't have to be glassy to go SUP surfing as shown here by our SUPboarder rider Aaron Rowe. Using a combination of good bracing techniques and board timing, paddling onshore SUP conditions can be really fun as Aaron shows.
Canoelover Things of Beauty
Canoelover - Mr. Edward M. White started the E.M. White Canoe Company in the mid 1880s. He was one of the first people to build canvas over wood frame canoes, probably after seeing Evan Gerrish paddle one of his canoes on the Penobscot River where it flows through Old Town, Maine.

Jackson Kayak Turning Around
Jackson Kayak - 730 miles of driving, 14 hours in the truck and we never got the boats wet on this day. Plans don't always turn out the way you expect, but with adaptation and a positive attitude a potentially ruined weekend trip transforms into a hometown adventure. Another river experience I'll never forget.
Trash Paddler A Brief January Window
Trash Paddler - Awaking to yesterday's rainstorm I had no plans to get out on the water.  However, when the rain let up at noontime I stepped out to get the mail and was surprised with how relatively mild it felt.  Hints of developing sunshine could also be seen.
SUPboarder Mo Freitas absolutely shredding the Californian coast
SUPboarder - Every time a new video is released from  Mo Freitas  we're always shocked about the amount of progression he's made since his last video. Mo is always looking to take his shortboard SUP surfing style that little bit further.
Palm Blogs Paddle fun trip to New Zealand
Palm Blogs - In December I headed to New Zealand with Susan Doyle and Ultan O'Kane to paddle as many rivers as we could and see as much of the country in one month. We stayed on the North Island for a week and headed straight to the Kaituna. On arriving we discovered that the Okere Falls Enduro race was being held there later that week and after a few runs on the river we decided to enter the race.
Elder SUP La Ventana Classic – A New Champion
Elder SUP - We love to watch elite SUP racers vie against the wind and current, gliding far on bumps and waves in a challenging down-winder.
Jackson Kayak Welcome Back to Kentucky
Jackson Kayak - Recently my wife and I were invited back to a place hidden deep on the shores of Kentucky Lake. West Kentucky Outfitters is located in Benton KY and has over a dozen cozy cottages on several wooded acres. The hosts can provide everything from some of the best home cooking, kayaking, hunting and some of the best fishing spots available. My first day back I couldn't wait to paddle out in my Coosa HD, so of course I said hello again and down to the lake I went.
SUP for the Soul Preview: Badfish Cobra
SUP for the Soul - When it comes to river surfing I prefer to surf river waves over holes, but holes are much more common, so I find myself surfing them more often.
Canoe Kayak Masters of Moloka'i
Canoe Kayak - Read this brilliant account of the Moloka'i Hoe race, one of the planet's premiere paddling events. The 41-mile race to Oahu is not only a distance battle between over 100 crews, but conditions that must factor tides, currents, winds and swell also add scale to the massive event. It is outrigger canoe race event, watch how crews co-ordinate change of paddlers from their canoe from escort boats here… It's a incredible story with pictures.
Mt. Hood H2O Whitewater fun at Table Rock Fork of the Molalla
Mt. Hood H2O - Aside from a trip through the lower gorge I had done many years ago, none of us had run the Table Rock Fork of the Molalla. We decided it would make a good trip for the day so headed up to check it out with the Molalla gauge around 4,000 cfs, dropping to around 3,000 cfs by the end of the day. Oregonkayaking mentions some larger rapids above the regular put in, so we drove up to the confluence with Lost Creek ...
SquareRock Scotland 2015
SquareRock - I've finally got round to writing a blog for our trip to Scotland back in November, what a trip it was! On our previous Scotland trip we only had one car, and saw nearly no other boaters, so it limited what we could paddle, as we'd have to do the shuttle on foot, which sucked.
