Playak News Flash - June 14, 2010
The world's latest paddling headlines.
A Wet State (CA) Write-up: Middle Fork of the Yuba, Plumbago
A Wet State (CA) - Finally after several years of trying to motivate a group to do into this run, I succeeded. As Saturday morning began, my group was set at 5. Soon, two more were accompanying. Within minutes, another would join. Once near put-in we ran into other friends and the group grew by 4 more. Is 12 people too many when trying a 13.5 mile run that none of us had done before and had supposedly 4 portages? Meh, perhaps. In reality, we knew the big group would slow our progress so we set out and paddled quickly through the first several miles. A few hoped out to scope the first major horizon line but reported it good to go and the team dropped through. The only slow progress was made in mile 5 which will require several scouts and possibly a few portages.
Wavesport Blogs Stakeout is over, Norway Lives on
Wavesport Blogs - So Stakeout is now over. As I sit on the train in Norway I have time to think back. In total 8 swims, 4 broken paddles and endless good times with the boys. Our group this year was: Myself, Rush Sturges, Patrick Camblin, Rudy Rampage, Benny Marr, Dylan and Max Davidson, Joel Kawalski, Eric Boomer and the Dutchie Caspre Van Klamthout. A solid crew to say the leist. This year was a little different from previouse Stakeout years, we had low water when we usually have raging high water. Non the less the boys were still keen to rally to quebec for some paddling and some good times with the Chicoutimi girls. Quebec is still a fairly untapped area.
CKS Squad Payette HIGH WATER
CKS Squad - This June The Paddling Community of the Payette got a surpise of HIGH WATER. This June was History The North Fork of the Payette got to around 9,000 cfs . Alot of awesome paddlers fired it up.
passion4adventure A return to the Apu
passion4adventure - lhama's on route to the Apurimac. Image - Zak Shaw Upon completing our Paucartambo descent we needed rest and Cola de Mono was the perfect place for it. JV's shoulder had connected hard with a wall on day two on the Paucartambo and once the pain killers wore off it got worse. (JV will now have his hands on the oars of a cargo raft in the Grand Canyon. I hope his shoulder feels strong)
Shane's Logic The Pilgrimage to Oh Be Joyful Creek
Shane's Logic - Oh Be Joyful creek is a pilgrimage for paddlers every year. It has all the makings of mecca for paddlers. If the season in the Crested Butte valley were a couple months longer there would be 100s of paddlers moving in for the summer but because the season is only a few weeks long it has the feeling of a carnival camp with new members rolling in daily and a frantic pace of paddling and partying up and down the valley.
Nick Troutman Glenwood Spring Summer Sessions: video
Nick Troutman - Colorado has been super warm for the last several days. With all this warm weather means that the snow melts, and what does that mean? HIGH WATER!
Paddling Life Stand Up Guy: Dan Gavere Wins Back-To-Back Championships
Paddling Life - With warm temps surging the Colorado River in Glenwood Springs to 14,200 cfs, a new grandstand area, and nearly five times as many spectators as last year, the national River SUP Championships brought the country's best watermen to the Rockies to do single-bladed stand-up battle on Memorial Day.
Fraser Valley WW May Long Weekend 2010: Day 2
Fraser Valley WW - For Sunday of the long weekend we awoke beside the Ashnola River by Keromeeos. The Ashnola is one of my favorite runs. Its entirely road side and you can drive up as far as 22 kilometers. The run is very continuous class 4 and some what boney even with a good flow. The rapids roll into each other with almost no breaks in between. This weekend the flows were teetering between medium and low. The Ashnola is a very hard river to predict flows on, and being 3.5 hours from home with no other great paddling options near by its always a bit of a gamble as to weather or not there will be good water.
Paddling Life Planet Canoe 2010 Edition Is All Wet....It's A Good Thing
Paddling Life - Sure, the weather is warming, the snow is melting, and the rivers are just about perfectly primed for paddling. It's hard to think about anything other than getting out and getting wet. However, nobody spends 24 hours a day canoeing. (Though some have tried.) When it's time to relax put down the paddle and pick up the 2010 edition of the ICF's official magazine Planet Canoe. It's out now and it's chock-full of all things canoe related.
Kayak Hot Dogs The Shuswap Paddle Party
Kayak Hot Dogs - Wandering into the grounds of the Shuswap paddle fest was like tumbling down the rabbit hole. I quickly realized that the event had more emphasis on the party than the paddle. Tents strewn across the grounds with limbs hanging out the doors were an indication of the previous nights exploits. Artful signs were posted on trees with a concert line-up that resembled fests like Shambala or Koots Roots. The concert stages were freshly constructed out of neighboring cedars. The main stage was awesome, a two tier stage complete with backdrop and lights.

Global Surfski Clint Robinson – "Well Worth the Wait"
Global Surfski - Australia's Clint Robinson: Olympic Champion, Surf Lifesaving Champion, and now, Molokai Surfski Champion. Clint paddled the Epic V12 Elite to the 2010 title.
Inflatable Kayak Blog PakBoats XT-17 Folding Kayak
Inflatable Kayak Blog - PakBoats has been designing and manufacturing excellent folding kayaks for several years. Their Puffins have been an excellent value, more boat for the money, than most other folding kayaks on the market. The only issue was that the Puffin line was a fairly "short" collection of kayaks ranging from 10 feet to 14 feet long, while many kayakers prefer their crafts to range from 15 to 18 feet long.
Adventurous Experiences Scerries paddle at 5:30am
Adventurous Experiences - During an action packed visit to Sea Kayaking UK in Anglesey, me and George managed an early paddle to the Scerries, with enough time for some pics and being checked out by the local wildlife, (as well as watching it snore) back on the beach by 9am in time to work :)
