Playak Weekly Digest - week 23

Playak Weekly Digest
The world's top paddling links in week 23, 2010.
Jackson Kayak Freestyle photos from the Teva Mountain Games!
Jackson Kayak (Wednesday 9th) *** - Enjoy these photos–I had lots of time to shoot as I didn't make it past prelims this year–DOH!!! This year had bigger air and bigger water than ever before. The highest recorded water level in more than 10 years was recorded the night after finals!
Jordan Searle Yuba Gap
Jordan Searle (Monday 7th) ** - What a run! After hearing reviews like 'the hardest run in cali' and 'some of the stoutest white-water you'll ever see' we were always interested in trying to bag this seldom run gem, but with dubious flows and little beta we didnt actually think it would come into fruition... we were wrong.
Jackson Kayak EJ's Final Update from Europe
Jackson Kayak (Monday 7th) ** - Today was our last full day here in Europe. We returned to Austria to the "Hardcore Wave" near Salsburg. Today we had a proper "hardcore" hole as the drop zone for when you fall off the wave, eventually, on each ride. It made it much more exciting.
Evan Garcia Getting Things Started
Evan Garcia (Monday 7th) ** - So I know it's been a crazy little run for the past two weeks, but I have been getting some really good paddling out here in Cali. This is a little update of some photos from the time I spent with my good Kiwi buddies here.
Teva Mountain Games Steep Creek Photos and Videos
Teva Mountain Games (Tuesday 8th) ** - Enjoy some photos and videos below from the Bud Light Lime Steep Creek Championship presented by Thule at the 2010 Teva Mountain Games! The event took place on Thursday, June 3 on Homestake Creek.
Evan Garcia The Kaweah's
Evan Garcia (Tuesday 8th) ** - California is doing some crazy things with its weather this summer...mostly just huge changes in temperature and precipitation. This has caused for hard windows in the runnable levels of the rivers that we want to get on. After some good times in the Northern Sierras we saw that the levels were looking perfect for some of the steep tributaries of the Kaweah. Mostly the East Fork, which is one of the best steep granite stashes in the State. So with a nice crew of paddlers I headed down to the old Hideaway Campground for a Memorial day weekend of shit running and good times.
Gene17 Gene17kayaking News letter – June 2010
Gene17 (Monday 7th) * - It's the dog days of the Italian Steep Creekin' season, it's been an ace , the lines fine and the paddling world class. However the season's change and we're now into Summer and of course Norway is calling any and all adventure kayakers. We'll be publishing more info on the Gene17 Ulla Extreme Race towards the end of June, and there will be more info on at least one new event in Devon this Autumn. In the mean time check out our news below, for Norway, Grand Canyon and French Alps fun.
BRT Insights Securing paddleboater's legal rights to whitewater river kayaking, rafting and canoeing in California and Nevada.
BRT Insights (Wednesday 9th) * - Identifying the public right-of-ways and public easements that enable paddleboaters to legally access our navigable rivers and creeks.
Wavesport Blogs Tanya Faux Takes #1 at Vail Steep Creek Race
Wavesport Blogs (Monday 7th) * - Today Tanya Faux had an 8 second lead over the rest of the 14 women after her 1st run, relieving pressure for her second run. The overall ranking is based on a combination of both runs, so consistency was key up on Homestake Creek, the infamously gnarly run outside of Minturn and Red Cliff, Colorado. Props to Tanya for paddling her Habitat 74 to 1st place and securing the $2000 prize!
Sweet Kaweah river drainage, So. Cal
Sweet (Monday 7th) * - After getting to boat with my two brothers for a week here in Cali, we then headed for the always sunny and inviting Kaweah river in Southern California. This drainage is one of my favorites out here due to the quality and amount of white water you can run in a short amount of time.
Savannah Canoe and Kayak Mega Bullitt S - Feedback for New Owners.
Savannah Canoe and Kayak (Tuesday 8th) * - Tom has been surfing all his life and recently took delivery of a new Mega Xtec Bullitt S. He sent us some excellent feedback on the boat that we thought would be useful to our other Bullitt owners.
Team Pyranha Teva Mt. Games: Days 2 & 3 Freestyle Comp
Team Pyranha (Tuesday 8th) * - Friday and Saturday we competed in the Prelims and Semi-Finals for the Freestyle kayak event at the Teva Mt. Games in Vail. Unfortunately nobody made it to Finals to compete in the somewhat terrifying flooded hole that was not only tricky to stick moves in, but also hard to avoid large logs and root balls. Due to this high water level, Day 4 river events, including the the 8-ball Boatercross were cancelled.
A Wet State (CA) Write-up: North Fork of the Kaweah, Lower
A Wet State (CA) (Tuesday 8th) * - A few months ago, Darin and I went to Three Rivers for a week of boating. Due to a Hospital Rock induced trio of cracks that the Upper North Kaweah turned into a very large hole, the trip ended after just two days. The following week I ended up at a wedding in nearby Hanford and returned with my brother to get on the Gateway run. Flash forward 2 months, as a cold spell hits Sacramento in the middle of May, I begin talk to friends who suggest going South will ensure warm weather and perfect water… at least the water part was right.
CKS Squad Cali Roadtrip: Part 1
CKS Squad (Tuesday 8th) * - Almost directly from the Embudo race I began driving in search of the granite wonderland known as California. The back-breaking fifteen hour drive was rewarded with the ever rising South Merced.
Astral Currently Jakub Styling Homestake Creek, Teva Mtn Games
Astral Currently (Tuesday 8th) * - Enjoy this helmet cam footage from Astral paddler Jakub Nemec during the Teva Mountain Games Steep Creek Championship
