Playak Weekly Digest - week 09

Playak Weekly Digest
The world's top paddling links in week 09, 2010.
Playak ***** Playak: Interview: Darin McQuoid (Wednesday 3rd)
There are personal challenges in kayaking that I've not found anywhere else. Anything from the cliche challenge of running a big rapid, to the emotional challenge of holding it together after days of non-stop travel through inhospitable conditions, expeditions always push me beyond my preconceived abilities.
LVM TV ***** LVM TV: Bikini Boat Carrying Contest (Wednesday 3rd)
Spring is just around the corner and we are putting together our first issue of the year #33. It is action packed with first descents on Upper Creek in North Carolina and The Iskut River in British Columbia, a 'sweet as' New Zealand piece produced by Tyler Fox, the complete Jocassee Experience, playboating, The Green Race and much much more.
Jackson Kayak *** Jackson Kayak: Villain in Cali (Sunday 28th)
The South Yuba has some nice big holes, and I can honestly say the Villain is the best boat I have paddled for punching holes. If you drive it deep the boat maintains nice steady forward momentum and resurfaces bow first, not in a "red October" rush to the surface but a nice, controlled forward moving resurface, very nice.
Playak *** Playak: Chile Earthquake (Monday 1st)
...The kayaking community should be OK. Santiago, Pucon, Futaleufu and higher places are OK. 7th (Maule) and 8th (Biobio) regions are very damaged, especially the coastal places. Some villages and towns are 50% down...
LiquidLore ** LiquidLore: Classic Upper Cheak (Monday 1st)
If you've been to Whistler to kayak you know what it's like and if you're thinking of going to Whistler you should run it. More than once perhaps.
Immersion Research ** Immersion Research: The Next Demshitz Movie "Dashboard Empanada" (Saturday 27th)
Here is a cool edit created by Demshitz paddler Isaac Levinson of Demshitz's most favorite river in the world. Rio Nevado top to bottom POV with Isaac and Evan Garcia.
Freestyle Kayaking & Expeditions ** Freestyle Kayaking & Expeditions: Costa Rica part 2 (Wednesday 3rd)
After running Rio Mucho we were ready for next mission. We hooked up with local kayaker Ferdinand Steinvort and two guys from states, Jerry and Forest, to run rio Patria. Running this river normally took two days, first day involve 3 hour hike and one nasty portage around the minigorge.
Palm Blogs ** Palm Blogs: NSR 2010 – The boat is made! (Saturday 27th)
The UK's National Student Rodeo 2010 is only 2 weeks away, and each year Palm Equipment make a custom NSR Kayak as the prize for the winning uni's Club.
Kokatat Blog ** Kokatat Blog: First Descents: "River Ward Trailer" (Monday 1st)
Our February partner of the month, First Descents, a non-profit organization for young adults with cancer, posted a trailer of their new documentary, "The River Ward". The film follows four First Descents' participants as they take on the rivers of Montana to overcome the challenges of whitewater kayaking and with it, prove to themselves that cancer, no matter how aggressive, dormant, advanced, or invasive, would never be stronger than they were.
Wavesport Blogs ** Wavesport Blogs: Some HD Footie and Short Article... (Monday 1st)
When paddlers think of the southeast particularly the Asheville, NC region they seldom think of world class play. And though the southeast does not harbor towering waves such as the Ottawa or the big water rivers of West Virgina there are a few gems that are tucked away in the mountains of Western North Carolina. My hands down favorite that I like to frequent this time of year is Slab and Eternity in Cullowhee, NC on the East Fork of the Tuckaseegee.
duemmstuff ** duemmstuff: The Last Day in New Zealand (Saturday 27th)
We had to climb into a dry river and wait for the water release. It wasn't the nicest feeling when an alarm on the dam went on. But it sure was spectacular as the water started to swarm in over the rocks and make them into some threatening rapids. When the river was at full flow we only had little time to scout the first rapid. It was huge, but we had no time to hesitate. We decided to run the right line, which isn't so commonly run.
Valentin Grollemund ** Valentin Grollemund: Broken collarbone... (Wednesday 3rd)
That's a really bad news which comes at the worst moment, I broke my collarbone in 3 pieces yesterday afternoon on a mountain biking session.
LVM TV ** LVM TV: Daily Digger/Green Race Teaser Pleaser (Sunday 28th)
With LVM 33(including the 2009 Green Race Video) nearly finished we thought we would show you some highly entertaining carnage from previous Green Races to get you fired up.
Wavesport Blogs ** Wavesport Blogs: DVD Honest (Wednesday 3rd)
Hi all, After winter spent skiing, snowbarding, working and editing hard is my pleasure to let you know about the DVD project Honest. Its all done, in distribution these days. And here is a little bite of it...
Astral Currently ** Astral Currently: Todd Wells' Chile Update (Sunday 28th)
The Claro is one of the most beautiful rivers that I have ever visited, but it is a very popular tourist destination and its banks are heavily littered in trash. As part of WCKA's dedication to community service all the students and teachers spent four hours one afternoon removing litter from over a mile of the river. In those four hours we removed over 20 full trash bags, and at the end of the day rewarded ourselves with a dip in one of the pristine swimming holes.
