Playak Weekly Digest
The world's top paddling links in week 10, 2010.
Playak Playak: DVD Review: Dream Result (Thursday 11th) *****
Independent Playak Review of Rush Sturges' & Tyler Bradt's latest DVD: Dream Result.
Liquid Logic Liquid Logic: Liquidlogic Jefe Grande in Review (Wednesday 10th) *****
Review by By Ross Herr: There are many boats on the market these days. Finding one that fits your style is key. I have paddled the Jefe Grande for going on 3 seasons now and I look forward to many more. There are many benefits and features to this boat I would like to point out and by doing so hopefully I can answer some of the many questions people have when making their boat choice.
playak.tv playak.tv: Middle Palguin Stout (Thursday 11th) ****
Running the stout ten boof into The Middle Palguin waterfall. Bryan Kirk had his go pro head cam on while he was snapping off some sick photos and got a cool shot of me airing out a massive boof!
Adam Johnson Adam Johnson: Carabiners, Safety Gear, & Whitewater Kayaking (Friday 5th) ***
Many of the people I paddle with, in addition to myself, have trouble carrying enough safety gear with them on the river. There are a number of reasons for this.
Jackson Kayak Jackson Kayak: Villain S Proto 2.0 on Upper Middle Cosumnes! (Saturday 6th) ***
I was fortunate enough to get out with a great group of friends on one of the best day runs in the world yesterday: UMC. We had a fantastic day on the river, with good lines run by all. This way my 3rd or 4th run down the UMC, and my first run down it in the Villain S proto 2.0. This boat is fantastic: FAST, predictable, holds a line at speed, easy to spin/turn low speed, boofs great, and shoots through foam and sub-outs like a hot knife through butta.
Dagger Blogs Dagger Blogs: Yoga for Kayaking: Upward Frog Pose (Monday 8th) **
The Iliopsoas is a hip flexor muscle group comprising of three muscles: The psoas minor, the psoas major and the iliacus. This group is one of the strongest of the hip flexor muscles and the psoas major runs from our lumbar spine across the hip joint to the upper inner thigh. Very important muscle! The interesting thing about these muscles, is that they actually need to be stretched to keep their normal tone.
Wavesport Blogs Wavesport Blogs: Mill Creek, WV POV (Tuesday 9th) **
There's no online gauge for Mill, but if you see the local creeks spiking it's worth driving down to check the flow. The level can be found often on BT as well. The top half of the creek is a perfect creek to learn how to boof, with all its slides and bedrock drops. The second half of the run, from the Falls down, gets much more bouldery and technical, and is solid class 5.
Seth Ashworth Seth Ashworth: Best trip ever....Uganda. (Saturday 6th) **
Spending most of our time in the Dorms at Nile River Explorers set us in the perfect location to paddle both the day one and day two sections of the river.
The Roaming Dials The Roaming Dials: New Zealand West Coast Compilation (Monday 8th) **
All excited about that new Alpacka "Witchcraft" boat, but it's snowing now and can't get out in my own boats even. So the best I could do was reminisce about the West Coast of NZ.
Self Support Kayak Camping Self Support Kayak Camping: The Campsite (Tuesday 9th) **
You've got your gear selected, your boat packed, and you're on the water. After a great day on your favorite waterway, it's time to find a camp and relax. This is fairly intuitive, however depending on where you're at there may be some rules and regulations to follow.
Rafting Life Rafting Life: Upper Browns River (Thursday 11th) **
There are three drops near the top and then 6kms of fairly continuous class 3 - 3+. After switching to play boats we headed on down stream running the small falls on the Browns before meeting up with the high water puntledge.
Trent Thibodeaux Trent Thibodeaux: Final Chile blog post video (Sunday 7th) **
Chile is a spectacular place and kayaking is an incredible way to see it. Chile is full of life. From the people, to the land and water and even the skies, Chile never ceased to amaze me. Everyday was better than the last. I miss it already and feel honored to have been able to be a part of its culture for a month.
Fraser Valley WW Fraser Valley WW: Dagger Nomad 8.1 Review (Monday 8th) **
By definition the Nomad is seen as a boat and boater constantly on the move to follow the flows of whatever is running. Often defined as the ultimate creek boat Dagger's Nomad is one of my favorites for increasing confidence and proving itself over and over again.
PeakUK PeakUK: Steve Brooks, Back in Europe (Tuesday 9th) **
The Futa is amazing, I only managed to run the Bridge to Bridge section as the river was double the volume of what it should have been. Apparently it had been continuously raining for the previous 7 months!!
Nepali Girls Rippin It Up Nepali Girls Rippin It Up: Updates From Inka (Tuesday 9th) **
The aim of the project is to produce a group of female river guides to work on the rivers in Nepal as safety kayakers, raft guides and kayak instructors. It will be a perfect base for the women to start training and eventually work and support themselves as employees or free lance guides within the Nepal white-water industry.
