Playak Weekly Digest - week 50

Playak Weekly Digest
The world's top paddling links in week 50, 2010.
Playak Tribute to Hendri Coetzee
Playak (Friday 10th) ***** - The death of South African explorer and whitewater kayaker Hendri Coetzee has shocked our small kayaking community. On Tuesday morning, 7 December 2010, Hendri was taken by a crocodile whilst paddling in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Evan Garcia Getting silly in Chile
Evan Garcia (Monday 13th) *** - So after arriving in Santiago I rallied directly to Pucon, like always. When I here nobody was around??? Then all the bitches showed up and were ready to Rally. My first day back I ran Todo Nevado with Rodrigo, Erik, and Ian...setting the pace for the trip we have followed suit with 3 Demshitz's drop runs, 2 Middle Palguins, Puesco, Tres Saltos, and an unbelievable stout on the Carhuello yesterday.
Level 6 Tunnel of Love
Level 6 (Saturday 11th) ** - We have been lucky enough to receive a lot of early precip up here in northern California and it has made for some decent winter boating thus far. On Sunday (12/5/10) I enjoyed a great solo day out with my girlfriend Callie, unfortunately the flows were marginal on Mears Creek. This run flows into the Upper Sacramento and is located about 20mins south of Mt. Shasta.
Team Pyranha Chile Photo-ings Round 2
Team Pyranha (Wednesday 15th) ** - Back in Utah now, here's a quick photo update from our last couple of weeks in Chile; including the Rio Negro, Rio Nevados, Middle Palguin, and a possible 1st descent on a Rio Curringue Tributary.
Nick Troutman Taking my Mom down the Ottawa in the Duo: video
Nick Troutman (Sunday 12th) ** - My mom is one of the main reasons for the spark of love for nature and the river. She would take me down to check out the whitewater as long as I can remember. So I thought it was about time to return the favour and take her down the river in true kayaker fashion. What better way to take a newbie paddler than in the Dynamic Duo.
Playak Titan Kayaks Genesis V:II
Playak (Friday 10th) ** - A boat designed for beginners to excel in and professionals to change the sport in.
Down Hill Kayaking Mexico Nostalgia
Down Hill Kayaking (Friday 10th) ** - For the last five years I have been lucky enough to spend the late fall/early winter in the magical paradise of eastern Mexico. The rivers that drain the eastern slopes of the Sierra Madre Mountains boast beautiful turquoise water and a seemingly endless number of waterfalls. Abundant water, lots of drops, and sometimes challenging logistics are all part of what made the annual pilgrimage to Mexico such an adventure every year.
Gene17 Advanced WWS&R November 2010
Gene17 (Tuesday 14th) ** - On a wet November morning a group of 4 met at the River Dart Country Park to begin the 2-day Advanced White Water and Safety Course being run by Simon. The morning started by recapping the standard course on dry land – this included a discussion on the various items of kit we were carrying, throwline practice and the merits of various mechanical advantage techniques.
Jake Ament Expedition Ecuador: Christmas in January
Jake Ament (Monday 13th) ** - Christmas is only a few weeks away. However, this year my real present won't come until mid-January. This year my most anticipated present comes courtesy of my friend Abraham Herrera. I met Abe while we were taking our ACA instructors course in West Virginia this summer. We got along very well and he has quickly become one of my favorite people hang-out with on and off the water..
Roaring Fork Kayakers Chile! Rio Claro and Pucon
Roaring Fork Kayakers (Wednesday 15th) ** - Well I have made it to chile after lots and lots of traveling. I cant express how much i love it down here. It is an incredibly beautiful country and has of course some of the best kayaking in the world. We arrived after 10 hours of flying, then spent ALL DAY sitting at a bus station in santiago awaiting a bus down to pucon.
New River Academy Another NRA first D
New River Academy (Tuesday 14th) ** - El Rio Turbio, where to begin. Maybe the fact that I almost passed out as I watched Evan Garcia walk by me and then go do a gnar waterfall and slide while I sat and took pictures. Or maybe it is that I completely killed it at creeking. Lets get back to Demshitz for now. Yws that is right we all stood in awe as we watched the people we aspire to become, like in the kayaking realm of life, drop insane stuff and cheer us on when we get ready to do our run. Alright now that I got that excitement out of the way it is time to talk about the river.
Charlie Simmons Here you go....more photos
Charlie Simmons (Saturday 11th) ** - Dupont State Park is a great resource for anything outdoors.....including some waterfall hucking even when everything else is low water or off......like the day after the green race when Duke decided not to generate electricity
the nile progression Nile Kayaking Festival 2010
the nile progression (Wednesday 15th) ** - m sat in the organisers tent - the Boda Boda X has just finished and the Nile Kayaking Festival 2010 is now well and truly underway. I have a cold Club in my hand and the tunes are pumping. It's another classic day in Uganda and we're all having the best day ever!!
Team LiquidLogic Fall Chillout at Soca
Team LiquidLogic (Sunday 12th) * - In October me and some friend had an aewsome Fall chillout weekend in Slovenia on the river Soca. It's mostly easy whitewater (II-IV) surrounded by beautiful landscape. A perfect place to spent the last days of kayaking for this year. So enjoy the video.
Dave Goadby Its melting…Fun on the upper Swale
Dave Goadby (Tuesday 14th) * - With a brief respite in the freezing temperatures the rivers in the North East looked as though may have some water in. We made the journey across the pennies, but with 1 metre snow drifts at the side of the road I wasn't very optimistic. However when we arrived at Wain Wath Force we were pleased to see a nice level on the Swale.
