Playak News Flash - August 10, 2010
The world's latest paddling headlines.
KayakQuixotica Boat Fit
KayakQuixotica - How you fit into your kayak can be seen as an issue of control. Simply put, you need places where your body connects to the kayak in order to make it do what you want it to do. Of course that's a little too authoritarian for my mind. Another more organic way to look at it is that on the water you become one with your kayak, it becomes your body, your skeletal structure and your skin. Your relationship to your craft is symbiotic. You don't ride in a kayak, you become one with it. You are the heart and mind of the creature, where you connect is simply the nervous system reaching out to the skin sending and receiving messages. The more connections we have the more we are able to sense our environment and control our reaction to it. We are not paddlers but creatures of the sea.
adidas Sickline News from Siberia
adidas Sickline - In the Bashkaus River Canyon in Siberia there is a book waiting in a metal box for all those kayakers who are not too scared to run Russia's toughest rapids. Ten of the world's best whitewater expedition kayakers aim to master the challenging river and write their names into the Book of Legends. Bernhard Mauracher is one of them.
OKS Keener Learning to Throw Down Under Pressure
OKS Keener - Hi everybody, Keaton checking in again after another awesome week at Keeners. This week was a really cool week for me because I achieved so many of the goals I had set for myself at the beginning of the summer. For one I now have really consistent clean spins, and I am now sticking my roundhouses really well. I also have now got my double pump really consistent which is awesome.
Mike Dawson Tacen and back
Mike Dawson - After a short break, and the training camp in Bratislava I'm back in Ljubljana, Slovenia on the course here in Tacen. The course here is pretty quite at the moment as most of the guys have headed off to the Europeans which are going to be held this weekend in Bratislava. We'll be going there next week for the Slovak open. As it's the only race prior to the worlds.
Sweet Crystal Gorge No.2
Sweet - Crystal Gorge close to a town of Marble/CO is one of the most beautiful places I ve ever been. Its also at least two hours from the closest hospital. Absolutelly typical run for a head cam I brought with the other day.
Dagger Blogs Team River Runner Veteran Kayaks Great Falls of the Potomac!
Dagger Blogs - For five years I've been a volunteer instructor with Team River Runner, a non profit organization that provides kayaking as therapeutic recreation for injured military Veterans . TRR's motto is " Health and healing through paddling". Witnessing that health and healing occurring for people who have sacrificed so much makes me very proud of our paddling community and is a testament to the beauty and power of the river experience.
Bryant Burkhardt Perfect Paddling Weather
Bryant Burkhardt - The wind was calm. The whole time. It did briefly manage to stir in the late afternoons but it was with all the energy of uncle Bob rousing from a tryptophan stupor after Thanksgiving dinner to change the channel to the other football game before falling back into the La-Z-Boy. Perfect weather for a paddle. Unfortunately we were hoping to sail.
Tony Paradise A yaffle of whales
Tony Paradise - The community of Torbay is located about 1o kilometres from downtown St. John's. It used to be primarily a fishing and farming community. Torbay fishermen were good oarsmen in their day but not as good as those in Outer Cove where I grew up!
Fat Paddler Mrs FP Decides To Try Paddling on Avoca Lake
Fat Paddler - My wife Bec used to paddle in Sydney quite often until a paddling friend told her that Middle Harbour, her usual paddle spot, is a Bull Shark breeding ground. Since then, she has refused to get behind the paddle, with a fairly healthy fear of the ocean critters that inhabit Australia's waters.
Fat Paddler Surfing the Point at Terrigal
Fat Paddler - Over the past week I've had the good fortune to grab a much-needed holiday in the sleepy town of Avoca Beach with my family. On this particular morning I awoke to head the call of nature and, walking past the window saw the above scene greet me. I quickly took a photo and posted it online and immediately got the "Red sky in morning, sailors warning" response from a few different paddlers around the world.
