Playak News Flash - September 6, 2010
The world's latest paddling headlines.
OKS Keener Garb
OKS Keener - Hey its Edward here and I'm going to be talking about Garb today. First off all, Garb is a very fast wave on the Ottawa River and probably the best because it is an amazing experience once you get to surf it. It feels like you are going so fast because the water is rushing under you at a very fast pace.
Dave Goadby Yoshino River
Dave Goadby - After leaving Kyoto we took a long drive south and spent 5 days on Shikoku. Our time was spent paddling the two canyons of the Yoshino, 'Oboke' and 'Koboke'. Although we only paddled 25km of the river it was so good we had to do it again, and again! We camped at the local rafting company base, right on the river, next to a little side creek for evening entertainment.
OKS Keener Jordan's last Blog
OKS Keener - Hey it's Jordan checking in for my last blog as a Keener this year. This last week has been incredible though injuries have also forced ne to miss to days of it. This Monday I blew my ear drum jumping off of BFR rock, a 20 ft. high cliff. That forced me to miss Tuesday though because I was able to get custom ear plugs I was able to paddle the next two days. It was uncomfortable and many times annoying, but totally worth it on the Rouge.
PDX River Explorers Late Summer Kayaking on Mt. Adam's! "Upper Upper Cispus River"
PDX River Explorers - August and September can be a bit dry on the local Columbia River Gorge runs. Rivers like the Little White Salmon, White Salmon, and the Wind all get a bit bony. But in the endless search to keep paddling, the NW never disappoints. You don't have to drive to far to find the find fluffy stash's of white water.
Dave Goadby Nazagawa Gorge
Dave Goadby - The Nazagawa gorge is an amazing feat of nature just a few hours drive from Tokyo. From the car park on the 140 highway we walked 4km along a jungle track up the valley, passing tens of beautiful falls.
The Roaming Dials Montana Creek @ 450 cfs
The Roaming Dials - Last year Paul Schauer, Thai Verzone, and I ran Montana Creek near Talkeetna at 350 cfs on the NOAA Guage. It was super fun but a bit bumpy.
Team Pyranha Norway Part II
Team Pyranha - Me on the first Drop of the lower Rauma..
Chicago Area Sea Kayakers Association Turtle-Flambeau Flowage: August 2010 Trip Report
Chicago Area Sea Kayakers Association - The Turtle-Flambeau Flowage is located off US 51, about 75 miles south-east of the Apostle Islands near the town of Mercer, Wisconsin (a.k.a. Loon Capital of the World). Some call it the crown jewel of the North Woods. It's about 50 square miles, formed by glaciers, fed by three rivers and drained by one. There are over 100 islands with 60 campsites scattered on the islands and around the edges of the Flowage.
Jackson Kayak Final Day of Summer on the Ottawa for the Jacksons!
Jackson Kayak - Tomorrow the Pan Am Championships begins! Tomorrow the high temperature will be 65 degrees and rainy. Today it is 85 degrees and sunny until 3pm where the rains started moving in and the win/temp makes it start to feel like autumn.
Fraser Valley WW Whistler, August 2010
Fraser Valley WW - The flows this year on Whistler's classic creek runs started off big and juicy then dropped off the charts within a couple of weeks. There was a short window to catch some of the classics like Callaghan and the Soo, although some local hucksters got many laps in at ridiculously high flows. We mortals only had a couple week's window to bag the classics. This August I did make it up for 2 weekends and did manage to get on most of the classic runs I had hoped to.
Liquid Projects Canada '10 Teaser
Liquid Projects - The boys go to Canada... Guests Matt Kenna, Mark Childerhouse and myself planned this trip last winter sat in the cold hurley weir eddy, I have just got back and here is the teaser for the full video we have to come!
New River Academy Corner Wave Freestyle Training
New River Academy - We just got off the water from a great freestyle training exercise. Today was Freestyle Day. That means we focus on 2 or 3 different freestyle moves and learn how to practice them and how to push yourself. We take 5 rides on each move. In these rides we are only doing these moves, this allows us to focus completely on the task at hand and not get distracted by wanting to try other tricks.
New River Academy Hit Your Line Day
New River Academy - Checking in here from the banks of the Ottawa River to keep you up to date on the happenings at New River Academy! Yesterday was Hit Your Line Day. Hit Your Line Day is the day where we all go out to a specific rapid and scout it as a group. Then we talk about the best ways to look at a rapid and break it down into pieces. This helps everyone to understand exactly what they need to do in the rapid without getting completely overwhelmed. Then every athlete picks a line that they think will challenge them and meets personally with the coach about it.
NC Paddle Surfer Saturday Morning
NC Paddle Surfer - When Hunter dropped from his 9'3 Ripper to the 8'4 Hokua his game went rock star. Go short people!
Level 6 Training in Plattling
Level 6 - To end the summer well and get ready for a full year of heavy-duty studying I decided to head out for a week of playboating somewhere in Europe. A few phonecalls and a skypemeeting later it was decided, Bretagne. The surf there had to be amazing according to surfwebsites, so France it was. Another phonecall later the group was downsized to 2 instead of 5. So Bas Horstink and me decided to hit Plattling for a week of sun and playboating.
