Playak Weekly Digest
The world's top paddling links in week 18, 2014.
Palm Blogs Cyclone Ita brings the goods
Palm Blogs - As the tropical cyclone Ita lashed both the North and South Islands of New Zealand with gale force winds and torrential rains it caused widespread chaos, power cuts, road closures, and flooding. Taking advantage of the extra water around some friends and I decided to go exploring.
Jackson Kayak How to Reduce a Dislocated Shoulder in the Backcountry
Jackson Kayak - Whether or not this is a topic you have personally had to deal with on the river, you have probably thought about it. How do you put the shoulder back in place? Should you put the shoulder back in place? While this is in no way an extensive guide, hopefully it will help clear up a few things.
Mt. Hood H2O Salmon Canyon with Oregon Field Guide
Mt. Hood H2O - Last summer, I got a call from a friend who works for OPB as a rigger (setting ropes to get cameras into remote places, along with the rest of the crew), saying that they were doing a story on kayaking the Salmon River Canyon. He said I should come along, and asked if I know a couple of the other guys that would be there, he thought their names were Luke and Ryan.
First Ascent Chris Korbulic Captures Epic Images of India: First Gallery
First Ascent - Chris Korbulic captures images of India from his recent expedition to Arunachal Pradesh in Northeast India to run the Siang and Siyom Rivers. "The motivation for the trip was to return to an old favorite of the big-water Siang River and to complete another first descent in Arunachal Pradesh on the Siyom River," summarizes Korbulic. "Arunachal is a wonderland of rivers and first descents, still almost completely dam-free and pretty wild-feeling but still very welcoming. It may be our favorite place in the world to paddle."
Palm Blogs A Cornish Girl's Guide to Sardinia
Palm Blogs - Sardinia is the second largest Island in the Mediterranean and is part of Italy. The weather is known to be warm and settled with the best times to paddle being April/May and September/Oct when the weather is not too hot yet still stable. The locals are friendly people and with plenty of maritime towns on the coast you can absorb the Sardinian culture, although traditionally Sardinians lived inland due to the past military invasions by sea. The water is warm, crystal clear with a beautiful turquoise colour just asking to be explored with a snorkel. The coastline has towering cliffs and white sandy beaches, with an ever changing array of geology the coastline is continuously changing.
GrindTV On-Water Adventurer completes ninth 1,000-mile journey
GrindTV On-Water - This is Cornthwaite incredible story of how his life got changed when he took a leap in his 25th birthday. His life is adventurous and happy. He has got more than he bargained because of his leap, read his experiences here and feel the warmth and beauty of life. Cornthwaite has covered more than 17,000 miles via skateboard, kayak, tandem bike, stand-up paddleboard, sailboat, bikecar, swimming, Elliptigo, and a Whike. He encourages us to be ambitious and adventurous in our lives too, that would make us better and more satisfied individuals.
Evan Garcia Grand Prix 2014 'My Wager'
Evan Garcia - Ok I haven't written on this blog for quite some time now...but I've got some time to go on an old EG rant.
Jackson Kayak Back Yard Run
Jackson Kayak - It's mostly class II, III with a class IV falls near the end of the regular run. At one time there was a steep, stout fish ladder below the falls that some people would attempt to navigate in the longboats of the early 90′s. I witnessed one of these attempts, it consisted of an ugly piton and a folded up C-1. Plain ugly to watch.
unsponsored Current GoPro Setup – April 2014
unsponsored - I use both a GoPro Hero 3 Black and 3+ Black editions. Both have there firmware updated every time there is a new release.
ACA Lifejacket Loaner Board
ACA - The Sea Tow Foundation is proud to announce that the ACA has opened a new Life Jacket Loaner stand at Motts Run Reservoir Recreation Area.
worldkayak blogs Spring Splash NOC Hometown Throwdown #1
worldkayak blogs - Spring Slash at the NOC was host to the first WK Hometown Throwdown at NOC for the year. We had a great group of competitors that traveled from near and far to show us their best tricks in the hole. We even had an appearance by the one and only Clay Wright (in his lighting bolt Rockstar).
Jackson Kayak Freestyle Big Trick Gladiator Wave
Jackson Kayak - 35 paddlers (27 men and 7 women) competed today on Gladiator Wave. The Ottawa Valley gave us a wonderful spring day with Sunny weather and high of 55 degrees. The format for today's competition was fun, and an all day event.
Jackson Kayak Waveosaurus
Jackson Kayak - After being given some local beta and finding out about high water levels on the Connecticut River, we discovered a wave was in near the Dinosaur Footprints in Massachusetts. EJ and I quickly loaded into the mini and Jessie Stone followed us on our search.
Jackson Kayak Grand Prix 2014 Begins
Jackson Kayak - This is my first time accepting my invitation to compete in the Whitewater Grand Prix.  People always ask me why I haven't been competing in it before. I would prefer to tell you why I am competing in it this year.  I have decided that I don't care how I do in the event.
PaddleBlogs Sup Exploration South of The Border
PaddleBlogs - It's hard to tell if the sport of whitewater SUP is growing or not. I spend half the year in Mexico and for the past five years there have only been a handful of us paddling SUP.
